Can you believe it’s been two years since the San Diego chapter of Girls in Tech was founded by a group of amazing, dedicated women? We can barely believe it ourselves! We would be honored if you would celebrate this milestone with us at FruitCraft on Thursday, September 12th – event details and sign-up link at the bottom of this post! First, though, let’s talk about Girls in Tech San Diego’s mission and what we’ve been up to for the past two years.
Girls in Tech San Diego is the local San Diego chapter of the global non-profit organization Girls in Tech. Our mission is to put an end to gender inequality in the tech industry, from billion-dollar corporations to start-ups and everywhere in between. We work toward this goal by educating and empowering women through workshops, panels, networking opportunities, and more. Since 2017 Girls in Tech San Diego has been partnering with tech giants like Amazon, Tealium, and Jam City as well as local companies like Learn Academy, Ivy Street Coworking, and Proven Recruiting to provide educational programming and community-building events. We’re proud of the supportive #WomenInTech culture we’ve created!
Over the past two years our passion for supporting women in tech and entrepreneurship initiatives have helped us create valuable events, always with the needs and goals of our community in mind. We have hosted two Hacking for Humanity hackathons for social good in which 90+ of the brightest and most creative minds in San Diego came together to build innovative solutions for addressing issues related to hate crime prevention and homelessness. We followed up last year’s hackathon with a pitch deck workshop, and offered free tickets to hackathon participants to support the next step in their journey with continuing to develop their projects.
Last year we held the first entrepreneurship roundtable in our Speaker Series, featuring Healthy Mama founder Flossie Hall and LEARN Academy founder Chelsea Kaufman. Members of the community from all different backgrounds and stages of professional growth gathered at PetDesk in downtown San Diego to drink in the wisdom of these incredible local entrepreneurs.
This year, Girls in Tech San Diego partnered with Jam City to host the Women Who Tech Women’s Resource Fair – the first event of its kind! Local organizations and community members gathered to celebrate women in technology and share information about job opportunities, scholarship opportunities, and the efforts made by different organizations to create and maintain opportunities for women in tech and women moving into tech.
We’re excited to continue providing valuable opportunities and experiences for women in tech in the years to come! In 2020 our goal is to raise $5,000 to provide educational opportunities for women transitioning into tech. We’re working with local coding boot camps to create scholarship opportunities and #FundWomen! Not all opportunities are created equal, and we are actively working to break down those barriers. Our anniversary event will be an opportunity for you to support this cause, and there will be other opportunities throughout this year and next as well, so keep an eye on our social media for more information about our fundraising efforts and the opportunities they’re creating for the women in our community!
Girls in Tech San Diego will be celebrating our two-year milestone on Thursday, September 12th, at 6:30pm with a gathering at local favorite FruitCraft. Tickets are $15 and available for purchase on EventBrite. Enjoy appetizers, cocktails, and building relationships with your fellow brilliant women in tech. Studio Luniste will be on hand to document this amazing evening in photographs, and EvLo will play the tunes that make you come alive on the dancefloor! We’ll share more about what we’ve accomplished over the past two years and you’ll get a preview of exciting things to come. We look forward to seeing you there!
